FAISALABAD, Nov 1: Following the killing of a man by alleged extortionists at Chak Jhumra, locals staged a protest demonstration, carrying the victim’s body, outside the District Council here on Saturday, besides blocking traffic on Sessions Court Road.
Nazir Ahmad of Chak 102-JB was killed inside his house allegedly by an extortionist, Imran Ahmad, on Friday night.
Protesters carrying banners gathered at the Zila Council Chowk and blocked the road in protest against the extortionists’ highhandedness and police failure to arrest them. Placing the body in the middle of the road, they burnt tyres and chanted slogans against police. They also threw traffic out of gear on Millat Road before heading towards Zila Council Chowk.
They said Imran had been demanding Rs200,000 from Nazir and got infuriated when he refused to pay the amount. They said the police were informed, but nothing was done for victim’s safety.
The police officials reaching the spot assured the protesters that culprits would be arrested within ten days. Following the assurance the protesters dispersed peacefully.
However, police claimed that Nazir had a business dispute with Imran that led to the incident. A case has been registered but nobody is arrested so far.—Staff Correspondent
