DERA GHAZI KHAN, Nov 1: Smuggling of wheat, flour, seed and fertilizers is going on without any check from the tribal area of Tuman Qaisrani to the NWFP and Balochistan with the alleged connivance of officials of the Border Military Police, the food department and the Punjab police.
The district administration has failed to evolve an effective strategy to check smuggling despite holding several open courts by the DCO, the DPO and the BMP commandant to take on board the tribal people in the anti-smuggling campaign.
Reports said smugglers had adopted alternative routes to continue the monkey business when Dera-Quetta Road and the Indus Highway came under strict vigilance after surfacing of the wheat smuggling scandal.
Tuman Qaisrani of the tribal area tehsil shares its borders with the tribal area of the NWFP and Balochistan, but neither the Punjab police in settled areas nor the BMP in the tribal area are playing their effective role in halting the flour smuggling.
A couple of days back, the wheat smugglers had deprived BMP officer Attique Khetran and three constables of their official jeep, weapons and a wireless set upon stopping them. Later, the smugglers disappeared after leaving the snatched jeep and weapons at a deserted place.
The area people, in open courts held by DCO/DPO and political assistant, pinpointed a nexus between smugglers and BMP and the police.
The people in the tribal area tehsil are holding regular protest demonstrations against a ban on wheat/flour movement in the area.
DCO Asad said the BMP, the Punjab police and the Baloch levy would patrol the area while a joint check post had been established at Gung Dam to check smuggling.
