LAHORE, Oct 21: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday restrained Sheikhupura district nazim and naib district nazim from performing duty.
Justice Maulvi Anwarul Haq also asked the Local Government secretary to submit reply on Oct 28.
Naveed Akhtar Khan, Union Council No 70 nazim, filed a petition challenging the working of the district nazim and his deputy. He submitted that two months ago then district nazim Jaleel Ahmed Sharqpuri was removed through a no-confidence move and the new election did not take place as yet.
The petitioner alleged that Malik Rehmat Ali, district nazim, and Malik Liaqat Ali, naib nazim, were holding these public offices without any lawful authority. He claimed that the Election Commission of Pakistan and the Punjab government had not issued any notification as mentioned in the Local Government Ordinance, 2002, for elections of these people.
He prayed the court to restrain both the nazims from performing duty and also ask the EC as well as the Government of Punjab that why these people held public offices without any legal authority. The court restrained Rehmat and Liaqat from performing duty till Oct 28 and also summoned the LG secretary
Lesco: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday restrained Lesco from disconnecting electricity supply to Model Town Housing Society which received an excessive bill of Rs73 million.
The court also issued a notice to Lesco authorities for October 23. The Society through its counsel Mian Iftikhar pleaded it neither defaulted in its 75-year history, nor it received such an inflated bill.
The counsel pointed out the Society received an average bill of Rs40 million per month but all of a sudden it surged to Rs120 million.
The counsel argued that Lesco had not informed the Society that under what law and for what reasons it was charging the excessive amount of Rs73 million.
He further said the society with an intent to pay the current bill of Rs40 million had already sent a cheque to Lesco.
The counsel pointed out that Oct 21 was the last date to pay the bill and in case of non-payment the power supply to the Society might be disconnected.
The court after hearing the arguments, issued an interim order till next date of hearing.—APP
