GUJRAT, Oct 19: The Jallalpur Jattan police have arrested a man impersonating as a retired major general for making phone calls to police officers to procure their undue help in the investigation of a theft case.
The police also arrested his two accomplices, including a woman, after registering a case against them under the Telegraph Act
The police said that Mohsin Abbas, of Gakkhar Mandi, Gujranwala, impersonating as retired major general Muhammad Sarwar had been making frequent phone calls to Gujrat DPO Tahir Alam and Sadar DSP Zikariya Asad for last many days to press them to help a complainant, Sajida Begum, of Dhenda village, in FIR No 282 registered with Tanda police station under Section 380 and 381 of the Pakistan Penal Code on Oct 10.
On Oct 17, Abbas made a phone call to the DPO who could not attend the call on which Abbas called the inspector general of police.
On having suspicion, the IGP directed the DPO to confirm the identity of the man from the General Headquarters (GHQ) of the Pakistan Army.
DPO Alam contacted the GHQ and he was informed that no person served the army as major general Muhammad Sarwar.
The police traced Abbas through his cell phone number and arrested him and his accomplices, Aslam of Gujranwala and Sajida Begum and registered a case against them under the Telegraph Act.—Correspondent
