OKARA, Oct 17: Hundreds of tenants, of the Kulana Estate, took out a protest rally on Friday outside Okara Press Club in protest against, what they claim, the highhandedness of landowners and possible eviction from the estate lands. A rival group of tenants also staged a rally outside the press club demanding a case against tenant leaders.

The first group of tenants arrived at tractor-trolleys at the press club and made a sit-in there. According to protesters, the estate has been cultivated by them since 1912 and they have been providing horses and moles for the Army.

Now, some retired army officers who got lands allotted in the estate, have started evicting the tenants. They said that three weeks ago, Sarfraz, a class seven boy, was shot dead while another child Nadeem Iqbal injured by the allotment holders.

Police registered a case against 23 people, including 12 nominated ones, without any arrest so far. Protesters alleged that police initiated a case against the tenant leaders to please the retired servicemen.

Similarly, the rival group of tenants also took out a protest procession and chanted slogans against tenant leaders demanding their arrest for the boy’s murder.

NO PETROL: People have been suffering due to the shortage of petrol for last many days. Filling station owners have stopped supplying petrol to motorists fearing decrease in petrol prices.
