KHAIRPUR, Oct 14: Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah said on Tuesday that Ghulam Mohammad Mahar Medical College of Sukkur faced many problems but assured the college would continue to function.
He said after inaugurating two-day international conference on “Literature and National Consciousness” at Allama I.I. Kazi Hall of Shah Abdul Latif University that no matter who had established the institutes, they should keep running in the larger interest of people.
He said that terrorism, injustice and excesses did not create better societies as the development and progress of a society came through pen, education and literature and through bullets.
There was no dearth of scholars even this day but honesty and true spirit was seldom found. Scholars and writers should never bow to any pressure and play a positive role in society, he said.
He said that Sindh had the honour for producing larger than life people like Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He had laid foundation stones of two institutes, SALU Khairpur and Radio Pakistan Khairpur as federal minister during PPP tenure in 1974-75.
He lauded the academic standard of SALU and said the university was producing qualified graduates and postgraduates. It was always responsibility of vice-chancellor to maintain academic quality and plan for the university’s progress, he said.
He said that the standard of education in Sindh was poor where about 7,000 schools were still non-functioning. As Sindh lagged far behind in education the present government was making efforts to improve the standard of education, he said.
Referring to the demands presented by the vice-chancellor SALU, the CM asked the university administration to submit the demands in writing and assured that he and his party would do whatever could to meet them.
He announced establishment of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto chair in the SALU and appreciated holding international conference in collaboration with Higher Education Commission.
Executive Director of Higher Education Commission Sohail H. Naqvi said that the problems of nations were solved through education because education was a definite way for progress.
Earlier, SALU VC Prof Dr Nilofer Shaikh briefed the CM about the conference and problems of the university.
The CM also inaugurated a newly-constructed a girls’ Hostel and a museum at the university’s archaeology department.
