LAHORE, Oct 13: A 40-year-old under-trial prisoner, who had sustained critical burns at the Camp Jail a week ago, succumbed to his injuries in Services Hospital on Monday.

The victim, Khalil Ahmed of Hunjarwal locality, a former policeman, was arrested first by Hunjarwal police in connection with some land-grabbing and fake encounter cases and later by Shadman police for his escape from Services Hospital.

Khalil, who sustained burns during medical treatment at the jail hospital on Oct 7, had alleged that another prisoner, Rashid Moazzam, in connivance with the jail administration, had set him on fire following a quarrel.

However, Camp Jail Superintendent Gulzar Butt claimed Khalil had committed self-immolation for unknown reasons, adding at least 20 people including patients, were witness to the incident.

Khalil was first arrested by Hunjarwal police four months back for allegedly opening fire on a police party to escape arrest.

He was on judicial remand.

He later fell sick and was shifted to Services Hospital on court orders two months back from where he escaped. He was in Shadman police custody.

Shadman police had registered a case and later arrested him after a month. He was again sent to the Camp jail and was kept in solitary confinement. Khalil again became ill and was admitted to jail hospital on Sept 26 where he allegedly attempted suicide by burning himself.

Shadman police had registered a case of attempted suicide against Khalil on the complaint of jail administration. The victim had two wives and six children.
