NAWABSHAH, Oct 13: The Wheat Grinding Plant and Chakki Association on Monday complained to the government of short supply of wheat to the district and demanded raise in quota.

The president of the association Abdul Sattar Arain and other leaders said at a press conference that the food department was doing injustice with them.

They said that the district food department purchased 780,000 wheat bags from April to June and it was issuing a quota of 40,000 bags with 3.5 kilogram wheat per head per month, which was much less when compared to the city’s population, which stood at 1,102,584 according to 1998 census.

They said that Sukkur with a population of 931,387 was getting 13 kilogram wheat per head per month. The department had enough stocks of wheat, which would not deplete soon even if it doubled the quota and last till March 2009, they said.

They said that the department was sending good quality wheat purchased from Nawabshah out of the district and giving them low quality imported wheat.

They said that they had refused to obtain the present quota and the chakkis were almost non-functional in the city, forcing people to buy flour at higher rates.They said that the district required at least 113,930 wheat bags to feed its population but the food officials’ actions were ensuring majority of them went hungry by not increasing the quota.

They demanded that the higher authorities take notice of the injustice and direct them to enhance wheat quota for the district.
