ISLAMABAD, May 8: The process of local government (LG) election in Islamabad will start by June, a member of the National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) said here on Wednesday.
“But it will be different from the LG system introduced in other districts of the country”, NRB member Dr Gulfaraz told Dawn.
He said though there were some differences between the NRB and interior ministry on the model of LG system for the federal capital, the issue had been settled. “The process of LG polls will start by the next month,” he hoped.
He maintained that like Peshawar, the single town district government would be set up here. “In contrary, other district governments have many town administrations headed by the Town Nazims.”
He said an ordinance had been drafted for holding LG polls in Islamabad, however it had not been promulgated so far.
“Though major modalities for LG setup have been decided, the promulgation of the ordinance is necessary,” the NRB member added.
Meanwhile, an Election Commission (EC) source said all was set to hold LG polls in the capital but the NRB and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration were waiting for promulgation of the ordinance.
The source said the EC had received orders from the higher authorities to finalize the arrangements in this connection.
He added that the ICT administration had prepared a comprehensive plan for holding the elections in Islamabad.
