GCUF faculty strike

FAISALABAD, Sept 19: The Government College University Faisalabad faculty observed strike in response to a call given by the Academic Staff Association to press the government for arresting felons who attacked the university registrar on Sept 10.

Assailants sprayed a volley of bullets on GCUF Registrar Zahoor Sheikh’s official vehicle near Imambargah Chowk, but he escaped the life attempt narrowly.

Though the police have deputed staff for security of Sheikh and a case has also been instituted against anonymous assailants, no arrest has been made so far.

Faculty members wore black armbands and remained present at their offices and no academic activity took place. They are not happy with the action taken by the police, and have demanded addition of Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act in the FIR.

The ASA gave the strike call at a press conference addressed by Dr Mudassar Butt, Dr Anwar, Dr A R Khalid and the registrar on Sept 17. They said the lethargic attitude of the police and the GCUF administration was pressing the faculty to initiate a protest drive. They said police officials had promised adding Section 7 of the ATA in the FIR, however, they did not.—Staff Correspondent
