Transporters’ warning

LAHORE, Aug 11: The All-Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Federation has threatened to start an indefinite country-wide strike in case the government does not control ‘highhandedness’ by National Highway and Motorway Police and ‘extortion’ of toll.

At a news conference at the Lahore Press Club on Monday, federation president Akram Khan Niazi said transporter organisations in all provinces were being contacted for joining the strike.

He said the NH&MP had become a major problem for goods transporters. Police officials were extorting money through fake challan receipts. He said there was no justification for imposition of toll on highways because transporters were already paying motor vehicle tax for use of highways.— Reporter
