Inflation surges by 31.9pc

ISLAMABAD, Aug 1: Weekly inflation surged by 31.92 per cent during the week ended on July 31, over the corresponding week of last year, Statistics Division said on Friday.

The inflation measured through Sensitive Price Index (SPI) is on the rise for the last few months due to upward adjustment in oil and gas prices, which pushed the retail price of every commodity.

The inflation, however, recorded an increase of 0.31 per cent over the previous week, indicating a rising trend in the prices of these commodities. There is a slight decline in the inflation, which crossed over 32 per cent in the previous week.

The SPI data showed that the worst hit were households with Rs3,000 monthly income.

According to the data, the SPI witnessed an increase of 33.57 per cent and 32.50 per cent for households in income brackets of up to Rs3,000 and Rs3,001 to Rs5,000, respectively.

For households in the income brackets of Rs5,001 to Rs12,000, the increase was in the range of 32.07 per cent, and for households in the income basket of over Rs12,000, inflation registered a growth of 31.77 per cent over the week last year.

The price of onions rose by 11.07 per cent to Rs19.76 per kg from Rs17.79, tomatoes by 10.09 per cent to Rs34.03 per kg from Rs30.91, garlic by 2.33 per cent to Rs38.72 per kg from Rs37.84 and kerosene by 2.33 per cent to Rs71.72 per litre from Rs70.09.

Chicken price went up by 2.20 per cent to Rs99.80 per kg from Rs97.65, potatoes by 1.55 per cent to Rs24.20 per kg from Rs23.83, LPG 11 kg cylinder by 1.39 per cent to Rs797.82 against Rs786.85 and cooked daal plate by 1.19 per cent to Rs24.59 against Rs24.30.

Washing soap nylon price increased by 0.1 per cent to Rs12.13 per cake from Rs12.01, cigarettes K-2 by 0.68 per cent to Rs8.82 against Rs8.76, masoor pulse (washed) by 0.66 per cent to Rs121.51 per kg from Rs120.71 and curd by 0.66 per cent to Rs41.39 per kg from Rs41.12.

The price of moong pulse (washed) was up by 0.54 per cent to Rs56 per kg from Rs55.70, mash pulse (washed) by 0.53 per cent to Rs74.10 per kg from Rs73.71, gram pulse (washed) by 0.52 per cent to Rs62.29 per kg from Rs61.97 and gur by 0.51 per cent to Rs33.35 per kg from Rs33.38.

Milk fresh price increased by 0.40 per cent to Rs34.84 per kg from Rs34.70, beef 0.33 per cent to Rs134.33 per kg from Rs133.89, cooked beef plate by 0.19 per cent to Rs37.19 from Rs37.12, tea prepared 0.13 per cent to Rs7.89 per cup from Rs7.88, firewood 0.12 per cent to Rs246.59 per 40kg from Rs246.30, mutton by 0.08 per cent to Rs250.34 per kg from Rs250.13 and mustard oil 0.05 per cent to Rs150.79 from Rs150.72.
