‘Enough numbers to impeach president’

LAHORE, June 30: Pakistan Peoples’ Party’s Punjab Information Secretary MNA Farzana Raja says the government is reversing policies of President Musharraf and has the support of required number of members of parliament for his impeachment.

At a Meet-the-Press Progra-mme at the Lahore Press Club on Monday, she said the constitutional package given by her party was for changing the system and striking a balance between the powers of the president and the prime minister.

She said 36 of 80 points in the package had been taken from the Charter of Democracy. Article 58 2-B would be repealed and powers of constitution of the National Finance Commission and the Council of Common Interest would be transferred back to the prime minister after the adoption of the package, she said, adding that president’s fate would be decided by the parliament.

She said the PPP was pursuing the policy of reconciliation at national and international fronts in accordance with the wish of the late Benazir Bhutto because it was necessary for changing the present political system.

The coalition partners, she said, were committed to respect each other’s mandate and desist from toppling any democratically elected government with the help of establishment. The government was committed to restoration of judges to November 2, 2007, position and was continuing negotiations with its allies for keeping the coalition intact.

She said the government had to make a substantial increase in POL prices because the previous regime was paying subsidy of Rs17 per litre on petrol and had delayed its revision to avoid risking the popularity of its candidates during the general elections.

She said six pilot projects had been launched to honour the party’s promise of developing one million housing units in the country.

She denied that the government had launched any military operation in tribal areas, claiming only ‘civilian forces’ were undertaking targeted strikes in certain areas.
