MIRPURKHAS, May 1: Haji Noor Hassan Chandio (president), and Advocate Shamsuddin Shaikh (general secretary), PPP (Mirpurkhas District), have thanked the people for boycotting the referendum.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, they claimed that “the masses had expressed their confidence in the leadership of Benazir Bhutto” by boycotting the referendum and expressed strongly that they wanted democracy in the country.
They said that despite using all government resources the turn-out was at the most 5 per cent in the district.
RALLY HELD: A rally was taken out by the Peoples Labour Bureau, Mirpurkhas District, from the local PPP office on Wednesday to mark the International Labour Day.
The rally marched through the main roads and terminated at the local press club.
Participants paid rich tributes to the martyrs of Chicago as all the labourers in the world had united after their great struggle.
They demanded the government to release the labour leader of Balochistan, Hameed Khan Baloch.
PEASANTS RIGHTS: Ms Zahida Detho, chairperson, Sindh Rurals Partners Organization (SRPO), said that the SRPO was striving for the rights of peasants and poor people, and to achieve the goal it was working on poverty elimination.
Ms Zahida was speaking at a seminar on the rights of labourers and peasants on Wednesday.
She said that her organization was creating awareness about the rights by holding seminars.
She asked the labourers and peasants to unite for getting their rights.
TWO INJURED: Two women were injured in an armed attack in Satellite town on Wednesday.
A man, Sher Ahmed Abro, has lodged an FIR with the Satellite town police that three accused — Sohrab, A Bux and Nawab Ali — came to his house and beat his wife and his mother when he failed to kidnap them as a result of which both were injured.
WATER SHORTAGE: The outlets of the main canal have been without any water as a result of which the growers are facing problems.
This was observed by the growers of Mirpurkhas Taluka on Wednesday. They said that agriculture had been ruined due to the mismanagement by the irrigation officials concerned.
