Seed firm owners’ protest

RAHIM YAR KHAN, May 15: The government should stop the ‘economic murder’ of seed companies and farmers and the storage of wheat seed should not be stopped.

This was demanded by the owners of 90 seed companies who demonstrated outside the DCO office on Thursday.

They said the seed companies were being dealt a blow on economic front and “the bureaucracy wants to create a crisis by providing wrong facts and figures to the government.”

The district, they said, produced record wheat crop. “The district administration officials are raiding our warehouses and food department officials are seizing the wheat.”

Next year, the farmers could not get the certified wheat seed due to this action. The government had allowed only the Punjab Seed Corporation to purchase wheat which, they said, was an oppression against the private seed companies.

The seed company owners were led by Mian Aamir Shahbaz, Abdul Ghaffar Anjum and Muhammad Afzal Mahar.

A district government official said the seed company owners sticking to the rules would not be distressed.
