KC official admits unfair fee raise

LAHORE, May 7: Kinnaird College Board of Governors’ vice-chairman Eric Messy has agreed with the protesting students that the ‘massive’ increase in BBA programme fee is unfair and said the matter would be put before the BoG.

The board meeting will be called on return of college principal Prof Dr Mira Phailbus.

Mr Messy gave this assurance to the KC’s protesting students at a meeting with them on the college campus on Wednesday afternoon. The KC students were protesting against fee increase in BBA and other bachelors’ programmes during the academic session.

Mr Messy, however, said the enhanced fees for other programmes were justified and the students should submit their dues. He, however, said the deadline for the submission of fees would be extended for one week.

Those facing inconvenience in submitting their dues due to financial constraints could submit fees in instalments or submit an application for fee concession, he said.

As for the power disconnection during college hours, the BoG vice-chairman assured the students that the college would arrange a heavy generator to meet the power crisis. About a demand that air-conditioners be provided in classrooms, he said, the demand was not reasonable as even many teachers did not have the facility at their offices.

The KC protesting students had gathered on the college campus early in the morning to stage protest demonstration. However, the faculty members did not allow them to go towards the main gate, where electronic and print media journalists were blocked.

The faculty members had reportedly also threatened students that they would be blacklisted if they tried to protest and gave statements to the media. The students were asked to protest in front of the principal office as they were not allowed to go outside the college campus.
