MPA censured for contempt of court

GUJRANWALA, May 6: The district and sessions judge censured a Pakistan Muslim League-Q MPA Irfan Bashir Gujjar from PP-102, Naushera Virkan, and made him to stand in the court for around one hour for allegedly committing contempt of court on Tuesday.

District and Sessions Judge Arshed Mahmood was hearing a case when MPA Irfan entered the courtroom and later threw his visiting card on the table of sessions judge, introducing himself loudly.

The sessions judge took serious notice of this act and tore the MPA’s visiting card and censured him for his committing contempt of court and ordered him to leave the court.

Later, the judge directed his staff to arrest the MPA when he was leaving the courtroom and sentenced him three-month imprisonment for committing contempt of court. However, the MPA tendered apology and some senior lawyers, who were also present there, also requested the judge to pardon him on which the judge recalled his sentence orders.

NOMINATIONS: As many as 30 aspirants filed their nomination papers in the court of returning officer here on Tuesday for single provincial assembly seat, PP-99, by-elections in this district.

Polling was abandoned after Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) aspirant Nasir Sundho died during the electioneering for Feb 18 general elections.

PML-Q former provincial minister Sohail Zafer Cheema, former MPA Mian Mazher Javed and former federal parliamentary secretary Rana Umer Nazir, the son of MNA Rana Nazir Ahmad Khan, of the PML-N were among those who filed their papers on the last date set for the purpose. Political parties, however, have not notified their respective candidates so far.

COMMISSION AGENTS: Commission agents of local grain market threw traffic out of gear on GT Road on Tuesday to protest the arrest of their three colleagues by district administration and police on charges of selling wheat on prices higher than that of the government price and demanded their immediate release.

On a tip-off that three commission agents had stored huge quantity of wheat in their godowns and were selling it against Rs750 to Rs850 per 40 kg instead of Rs625 per 40 kg price fixed by the government, a team led by Deputy District Officer (General) Syed Sakhawat Ali Shah raided the market and arrested Nazir Ahmad, Asif and Barkat Ali.

Later, a case was registered against them with Model Town police followed by the protest launched by their colleagues for their release.

However, heavy contingent of police reached the spot and made them to lift the blockade on which the demonstrators dispersed.

ROBBERIES: Robbers looted two houses and two traders while a man was deprived of his motorcycle in separate incidents in this district on Tuesday.

Five outlaws entered the house of one Riasat Ali in village Saroki Cheema near Wazirabad, took inmates on gunpoint, locked them in a room and fled after collecting 4,000 Euros in cash and gold jewellery worth Rs150,000.

Six dacoits stormed the house of one Manzoor Ahmad in village Chak Ugo near Qila Dedar Singh, tied the inmates with ropes and fled after snatching Rs90,000 in cash, gold jewellery weighing 18 tolas, cellular phones and other valuables.

Yasir Saleem, a trader of Hafizabad Road, and Haji Muhammad Amin, another trader of Bakhetaywala, were on their way after withdrawing Rs700,000 and Rs200,000 from their banks, respectively, when four robbers intercepted them separately and snatched the money and fled.
