LAHORE, April 27: Jamat-i-Islami Secretary General Syed Munawwar Hassan has said the ruling coalition was trying to resolve the issues merely by issuing statements instead of providing relief to the people.

Commenting on the working of the new government in a statement issued here on Sunday, Hassan said the rulers were reluctant to restore the deposed judges on the one hand and had failed to take notice of skyrocketing prices of essential commodities on the other. He said the dream of restoration of democracy was shattering as the rulers not only wanted to continue the policies of President Pervez Musharraf but they were also ready to work with him for the next five years.

He said people were being forced to commit suicides after finding it impossible to make both ends meet with their limited incomes, but the rulers of the nation, which was under Rs5,300 billion debt, were holding lavish banquets instead of conducting accountability of their predecessors for wheat and stock exchange scandals. The people would not remain silent for long in case the rulers continued their double standards.

Meanwhile, Jamat Deputy Secretray General Farid Ahmed Piracha has called upon the Pakistan Peoples Party legislators and workers to play their role for preventing their party from being turned into the `crutches of the military dictator’ and getting hijacked by vested interests.

He said the nation unanimously wanted restoration of judges and review of `the policy of serving American interests’. It was for the PPP workers to decide whether they would stand by the people or the military dictator serving the US, he added.
