LAHORE, April 23: A Sunday bazaar will be set up in Shadbagh to ensure the provision of good quality edibles to the residents of the area at economical prices.
Fiber stalls will be established around Gol Bagh for the purpose, announced District Coordination Officer (DCO) Sajjad Ahmad Bhutta on Wednesday.
No vendor will pay rent for stall or tents to any government official and the town municipal officer will be responsible for the provision of such facilities to traders.
The DCO directed market committee officials to ensure the provision of items at the Gol Bagh makeshift market at Rs5 to Rs15 less than the open market. He ordered the officers to clear the thoroughfares around Gol Bagh of encroachments, remove garbage, carry out patch work on roads and devise an alternative route for traffic before arranging the makeshift market.
There will be eight truck loads of flour bags at the new Sunday bazaar.
Makeshift markets were introduced in Lahore in the regime of the late Gen Ziaul Haq, to ensure provision of quality kitchen items, vegetables and fruits to the low-income population.
The ground near the Fortress Stadium became the first Sunday bazaar of Lahore, followed by the Shadman Link Road, the Wahdat Colony, Islampura, Baghbanpura, Shadbagh, GT Road near Shalamar Gardens, Gulshan-i-Ravi, Moon Market of Allama Iqbal Town, Sabzazaar, Walton Road, Model Town, Township, Wapda Town and Cantonment.
Another Sunday bazaar was arranged outside Mochi Gate recently followed by the one being planned at Shadbagh.
KISSAN BOARD: The Kissan Board Pakistan president has urged the government to purchase wheat at international rate to foil the designs of those who want to create anarchy in the country through a wheat crisis.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, board president Sardar Zafar Husain said farmers would not sell wheat to the government at Rs625 per 40kg when they were being offered Rs1,100 to Rs1,200 per 40kg in Bannu and investors were offering them Rs800 per 40kg for the standing crop.
He said there was a possibility of wheat smuggling through the Afghan border with the support of foreign powers if the government does not bring the wheat price on a par with the international price.
