Case against three cops for detaining old man

SAHIWAL, April 17: Police have registered a case against their three colleagues for detaining an 80-year-old man and his grandson illegally here in Sahiwal, Dawn has learnt.

A bailiff rescued Haji Abdul Aziz and his grandson Adnan from police custody on April 8 after three weeks of illegal detention.

CIA police picked up Ahmed and his grandson, Adnan, 23, from their shop on March 15 in connection with a dacoity at an expatriate’s house. Police detained them at a private farmhouse for three weeks. The Sahiwal district and sessions court judge ordered medical examination of the rescued men. On, Thursday, medical report confirmed that they were tortured.

Ghala Mandi police lodged a first information report against three constables -- Naseer Ahmed, Muhammad Ishaq and Abdul Ghafar – for detaining Aziz and Adnan illegally. Dr Rizwan, superintendent of police (investigation) reported to the district and sessions judge that Aziz’s son was wanted by police in nine dacoity and illegal arm trafficking cases.

But Aziz’s lawyer, Abdul Mateen, told Dawn that his client had disowned his son in 1998 and if his son was involved in crimes, why should an 80-year-old man be held?

“It is not enough to arrest just three junior officials as we want those officers who issued orders for the arrest of the old man be also be brought to justice,” Mateen said.
