Case against protesters

BAHAWALPUR, April 8: A case has been registered against demonstrators instead of accused police officials in connection with the murder of a man, who was baton charged by police near Qaimpur on April 1.

Qaimpur police officials claimed they had registered a murder case against demonstrators on the complaint of victim Atta Waince’s relatives. People blocked a road near Jamalpur on April 1 in protest against Waince’s death in custody. A police team resorted to baton charge to clear the road.

Qaimpur SHO Parvez Bajwa has been quoted as claiming that Waince’s wife, brother and brother-in-law had complained to the police that Mahar Akhtar and others pushed Waince against a tractor-trolley, injuring him critically.

Later he died at Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital.—Correspondent
