SUKKUR, April 2: The three barrages of Sindh are facing 65 to 67 per cent water shortage because of which sowing of Kharif crop will likely be affected, while some canals of Sukkur Barrage and Guddu Barrage closed for 30 days.

Evening upstream at Sukkur Barrage today was recorded at 16,400 cusecs while downstream at 4,700 cusecs, said sources. Similarly, at Guddu Barrage upstream and downstream were 20,000 cusecs and at Kotri Barrage upstream was 2,184 while no water being released in downstream.

Irrigation sources said due to annual closure right pocket canals of Sukkur Barrage including NW Canal, Dadu Canal, and Rice Canal had been closed for 30 days from April 1 and would be re-opened on April 30. On the other hand all three off taking canals of Guddu Barrage which include Ghotki Feeder, Begari Canal and Pat Feeder Canal had also been closed for 30 days from April 1.

In this connection irrigation expert does not foresee any betterment in the River Indus till April 15, as Mangla Dam had also reached its dead level 1,040 feet, while Tarbella Dam reached its dead level 1,369 feet last month.

According to irrigation experts this shortage of water will affect the sowing Kharif Crops but condition was expected to improve after April 15.

TWO KILLED: Two minor boys were killed and 10 people including bridegroom were injured in a road accident near Bahoo Khoso near Thull on Wednesday.

According to details, a Datsun pickup carrying marriage party was on way to Bahoo Khoso from Sher Muhammad Gashkori village. When it reached near Bahoo Khoso the tie rod of the vehicle broke down and it overturned killing two boys, 10-year old Muhammad Hanif s/o Muhammad Khan Gashkori and seven-year old Abdul Razzaq s/o Muhammad Yaqoob Gashkori on spot and injuring 10 people, including the bridegroom.

The injured were shifted to local hospital.
