PESHAWAR, April 1: Students of various educational institutions on Tuesday continued taking out rallies demanding of the government to fix date for holding elections of the student unions.The students of various colleges led by People’s Students Federation (PSF), a student wing of Pakistan People’s Party, and Pakhtun Students Federation (PkSF), came out in separate processions and gathered in front of the Peshawar Press Club.

The protesting students raised slogans in favour of the students’ unions and appreciated Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani for lifting the ban on such unions.

They were holding banners and placards inscribed with demands that the government should announce schedule for holding students elections across the country.

Speakers on the occasion said that restoration of the unions was a long-standing demand of the students which were banned by military dictators to suppress voice of the new generation. The students also distributed sweets on the occasion. The students of PkSF expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the provincial leadership of the federation and demanded its replacement through elections. Meanwhile, the activists of Jamiat Al-Dawa staged a protest demonstration in front of the Peshawar Press Club against the publication of blasphemous cartoons.
