ISLAMABAD, March 19: Asim Shafique and Jibran Muhammad have been selected for Pakistan Davis Cup team along with Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Aqeel Khan who were already selected for the Group-III of Asia, Davis Cup.
The two players were selected after five-day trial matches held at PTF (Pakistan Tennis Federation) Tennis Complex Islamabad.
The Asian Davis Cup Group-III will be held in Tehran on April 9-15.
Pakistan will meet Iran, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam in Tehran at clay courts.
Pakistan faces a tough meet in its group as only two teams will move to Group-II to be played next year.
Talking to Dawn President PTF, Dilawer Abbas said that despite the fact that the competition is extremely challenging and they still expected to win some matches.
He said “we are trying to get a player Rameez for the Group-III Davis Cup from Australia” he added “we are negotiating with him and hopeful of getting some results within four days”.
Rameez is an Australian of Pakistani origin as he is playing at university level in Australia and is ranked at a good level, he said.
Abbas added that our team will get stronger with the inclusion of Rameez.
About tough matches of Pakistan in its Group-III Davis Cup, Abbas said that they had high hopes with Aisam ul Haq and Aqeel Khan.
He said that the players would also give tough time to their rivals in double category matches.
Following players appeared in five-day trails: Asim Shafique, Shehzad Khan, Jalil Khan, Yasir Khan, Abid Ali, Tanvir and Jibran.
Rashid Malik has been nominated as non-playing captain while Muhammad Arif Qureshi, will accompany the team as the manager for the Davis Cup Group-III tournament.
