Ahsan upsets Ali Yar

LAHORE, April 12: Seventh seed Ahsan Qamar (PIA) upset second seed and former national champion Ali Yar Beg (ABL) 3-1 to enter the semi-final of the fifth All-Pakistan Badminton tournament at the New Khan court Friday.

In a game that lasted 45 minutes, Qamar played excellently to outclass Beg 7-5, 0-7, 7-2, 7-1.

The first game was won by Qamar by a narrow margin 7-5 as at one stage of the game both were tied at 5-5. Qamar earned two winners to clinch victory.

Beg recovered himself in the second game and tied the match 1-1 without conceding any points. Qamar however, overwhemled Beg in the next two games with his powerful fore-hand and back-hand shots winning 7-2, 7-1 to proceed to the semi-final.

In another match top seed Wajid Ali (New Khan) faced a strong challenge from eighth seed of the tournament, Aamir Islam (Wapda).

In the closely contested first two matches, Wajid met with tough resistance but eventually prevailed upon his opponent winning both games 7-6, 8-6. The third game was an easy win for Wajid in which he dropped only one point to win 7-1.

In other matches of the day Omar Zeeshan of PTCL fought hard to beat colleague Ashraf Masih 7-5, 8-7, 7-5, while fifth Waqas Ahmad (New Khan) beat seventh seed Zafar Tasnim (Wapda) with the score 7-4, 4-7, 8-7, 7-5.

Earlier late on Thursday night, the four mixed doubles quarterfinals were decided.

RESULTS:

Aamir Islam and Shazia bt Ali Yar Beg and Rabia 3-7, 7-4, 7- 8, 8-7, 8-7. Waqas Ahmad and Uzma bt Tahir Ishaq and Aneeqa 7-2, 7-0, 4-7, 7-4. Imran Mohib and Saima bt Munir and Aneela 7-5, 7-4, 7-5. Wajid Ali and Aasma got walk over against Zafar and Farzana.
