KARACHI, April 11: The central coordination committee of Pakistan People’s Party has appealed to the Supreme Court and the Election Commission to stop the government from holding unconstitutional and illegal presidential elections.
“It is necessary to save the country and the nation from a worst crisis,” said party’s central coordination committee with met with Makhdoom Amin Faheem in the chair.
The meeting reviewed the situation created after the announcement of the schedule for presidential referendum. It considered the accusation by Gen Pervez Musharraf against the former Prime Minister and the party chief Benazir Bhutto.
The meeting expressed its belief that the highest judiciary would not allow Gen Pervez Musharraf and his non-elected colleagues to play further with the destiny of the country and the nation, and would stop the government from holding the referendum in the light of the ruling of Supreme Court pertaining to Oct 12 army operation.
Drawing the attention of the EC towards the expenditure from the national exchequer on the publicity campaign in support of referendum, the meeting appealed to the CEC to take the government to task why billions of rupees were being spent on holding of referendum while the country had been passing through a worst economic crisis.
