ASP’s killer gets death sentence

RAWALPINDI, Feb 7: An anti-terrorism court here on Thursday awarded death sentence to a man for killing an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) two years back.

The special Judge, Sakhi Mohammad Kahot, awarded death sentence to Abdul Rasheed and acquitted four other accused in the murder case of ASP Salman Ayaz, 28.

The killer has also to pay Rs60,000 fine and in case of non-payment he will undergo one month’s additional imprisonment.

The convict was also sentenced to one year’s rigorous imprisonment for possessing illegal weapons and for the same offence he will have to pay Rs5,000 fine. In case of non-payment, he will undergo one month’s extra imprisonment.

The judge absolved Arshad Rasheed, Shakeel Akhtar, Yasir, Qaiser and Babar for absence of any incriminating evidence. Another man, Zaheer Abbas, was declared proclaimed offender.

According to the case, on a tip-off the ASP leading a Saddar Berooni police team raided a house in Kohala Khurd village on Chakri Road on January 18, 2006, to arrest Zaheer Abbas, who had released a kidnapped boy after taking ransom.
