RAWALPINDI, April 9: About 110 public transport vehicles were rounded up by the city administration to take people to Lahore to make General Musharraf’s first public meeting a success, at the expense of making the commuters go without transport.
Scores of people were seen waiting at different bus stops on Murree Road for hours to get public transport to reach their destinations. The rush peaked during office-closing hours.
The local administration started apprehending Hiace and other omni-buses since Monday. About 100 Hiace, eight omni-buses and two trucks were rounded up and kept in the Liaquat Bagh at night.
Transporters association expressed outrage at the high- handed action of the government and lamented, “what can we do, might is right here”, remarked the president of the local omni- bus association.
The union leaders said they were deprived of their earnings for two days and the government has also not paid us anything for using our vehicles.
The district Nazim, Tehsil Nazim and deputy Nazim and Nazims of different union councils left for Minar-i-Pakistan rally with about 2,000 supporters on Tuesday.
The elected representatives were trying to convince people of their respective constituencies, till late night, to accompany them to the Lahore rally.
