BANGKOK (Thailand), April 6: Shahid Jan of Pakistan narrowly defeated Punsom Bahadur of India 31-30 on point in a second round match Saturday to reach the quarterfinals of the King’s Cup International Amateur Boxing Tournament.

The keenly contested 57-kilogram (125.4 pound) featherweight bout was fought before wildly cheering local fans and the president of the International Boxing Association, Anwar Chowdhury of Pakistan.

In the other featherweight clash, Jahongir Suvankulov of Uzbekistan scored a 23-20 decision against Russia’s Poulkevitch Serguel.

Although taking the count in the fourth round and having four points dropped after using his head to hit his opponent, Suvankulov was declared winner after four rounds.

In the 60-kilogram (132-pound) lightweight category, Japan’s Takashi Uchiyama defeated arch-rival South Korean Baik Jong-Sub on an 18-16 decision to reach the quarterfinals.—AP/APP
