MIRPURKHAS, Jan 16: Sindh Provincial Police Officer Ali Azhar Farooqui has said that though there was no danger of sectarian conflict, a threat of sabotage was there and anybody could be a target.

He was talking to reporters here on Wednesday at the Mirpurkhas DIG office after holding a meeting to review the law and order situation.

The meeting reviewed arrangements for Muharram and for elections in Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Tharparkar and Sanghar districts.

To a question about the danger of suicide bomb attack on important political personalities, the PPO said that sabotage incidents could occur in any condition and anybody could attempt to take benefit of a situation when people gather in a large number. He feared that terrorists could attempt to create chaos in society by attacking innocent people.

Without pointing out any particular person, he said anyone could a target.

He said that sectarian conflicts had been eliminated from Sindh and there was no danger of clash between any sects.

However, he added, the law and order situation should be monitored closely as sabotage incidents had happened in other provinces and miscreants and terrorists could strike in Sindh.

The PPO said that police were on alert and all possible security arrangements had been made keeping in view these conditions. He said that Rangers and police personnel were working jointly to maintain law and order in Sindh.

Regarding the police negligence during riots that followed the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, he said negligent police officers were being replaced.

Police were responsible to provide protection to live and property of people, he admitted.

BAN: The Mirpurkhas district nazim under the Section 144 has prohibited the entry of unauthorised persons in examination centres during the BA, BSc, BCom and Home Economics part-I papers. The nazim has also prohibited the operation of photostat machines near examination centres in the district.
