DBA poll cancelled after clash

DERA GHAZI KHAN, Jan 15: Polling for annual district bar association elections was cancelled here on Tuesday after lawyers scuffled over the snatching of a ballot book by a former bar president.

The new election date will be announced by the Punjab Bar Council.

Reports said 572 lawyers gathered here in front of the district bar hall where polling was continued. In the meantime two groups of lawyers had a scuffle when former bar president Naseem Ahmed Khosa snatched a ballot book. Another lawyer, Aqeel Ahmedani, burnt the polled votes.

The election commissioner told this correspondent that now polls would be held under the supervision of Punjab Bar Council.

JHANG: Ghulam Farid Naul was elected president of the district bar association for the third consecutive term on Tuesday.

According to official results, Naul got 239 votes and defeated his rival, Sajid Sial, who got 170 votes.

More results showed that Mazhar Lakhnana was elected vice-president with 186 votes. He defeated his rivals, Ghulam Murtaza Gujjar (161 votes) and Farhat Shah (53 votes).

Malik Amjad became secretary-general by securing 186 votes. He defeated his rivals, Shahbaz Gujjar (121 votes) and Zumurad Shah (96 votes). Saqlain Shah and Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah had already been elected joint secretary and finance secretary unopposed, respectively.

Naul is also district president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

MIANWALI: Sultan Sikandar Khan was elected president of the district bar association (DBA) during its annual elections on Tuesday.

Saifullah Khan Daudkhel was elected vice-president, Manzoor Ahmed Khan Niazi general-secretary, Malik Shahid Iqbal joint-secretary, Zafar Iqbal Bhatti finance-secretary and Naeemullah Khan was elected librarian.

Khurshid Anwar Khan, Sanaullah Khan, Ghulam Hassan Khwaja, Malik Muhammad Anwar and Kamran Khan were elected members of the DBA’s executive committee.

RAJANPUR: PPP-backed Mian Abdul Ghafoor was elected president of the Rajanpur DBA while Qaisar Abbas was elected general-secretary during bar’s annual elections on Tuesday.

FAISALABAD: Nasir Ali Goraya was elected district bar president in one-on-one competition with Changez Khan Kakar here on Tuesday.

As many as 1,316 lawyers exercised their right to vote. The polling was stopped for 90 minutes owing to mismanagement and scuffle between some lawyers.

Announcing the result, DBA president Tanvir Ahmed Randhawa said that Mr Goraya was elected president for next term with 745 votes while his rival Mr Kakar bagged 558 votes.

Last time, Goraya had obtained 644 votes but was defeated by Mr Randhawa with 12 votes.

Farrukh Gulzar won the secretary-general slot by getting 1,007 votes while his opponent Jamsheed Gul obtained 280 votes.

Rana Irshad Ahmed was elected vice president, Kaleem Usman as joint secretary and Mehmood Akhtar as finance secretary.

Results of 10 executive member slots will be announced on Wednesday (today).

VEHARI: Sardar Ghulam Abbas of Friends Group was elected president and M Afzal Shahb of Likeminded Group general secretary of the district bar.

Sajjadur Reman was elected SVP, Ch M Saleem VP, Azam Chishti joint secretary.

Other office-bearers were elected unopposed.
