GENEVA, April 5: More than 184,000 Afghan refugees have gone home under an assisted return programme launched on March 1 by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

At the Takhtabaig registration centre, the daily average of people wanting to go back is 14,000, UNHCR spokesman Ron Redmond said on Friday.

About 50 Afghan families left Karachi on Thursday and the UNHCR said another 110 families registered to leave on Friday. Many of the refugees were Uzbeks, Redmond said.

In Balochistan, 1,000 people left on Thursday through the Chaman border crossing.

Next week, probably on April 9, a voluntary return programme of Afghan refugees from Iran is due to begin after the signing of an agreement.—AFP
