KARACHI, Jan 8: A man committed suicide at the office of his sister’s husband, a police officer, in Jamshed Quarters early on Tuesday morning.

Station Investigation Officer Sub-inspector Ghulam Hussain told Dawn that his brother-in-law, Ateeq, 38, was suffering from depression as he had been out of work for a few months.

He claimed that he left his office at 1am leaving behind his brother-in-law who later shot himself with an unlicensed pistol at his office.

He said that Ateeq, a resident of Nazimabad’s Gole Market, left two children. “He was working at a handbag manufacturing unit before he became jobless,” he added.

Police said that the body was handed over to the victim’s family after a post-mortem examination. They said the family did not want any investigation into the death of Ateeq.

Meanwhile, robbers shot dead a man, Mohammad Niaz, 45, when he tried to resist their bid to snatch his mobile phone near People’s Stadium in Lyari on Tuesday. The deceased, a resident of Agra Taj Colony, sustained a bullet in his skull and later died at the Civil Hospital Karachi.

A senior Dawn staffer was deprived of his mobile phone and money by armed robbers riding a motorcycle on Aiwan-i-Sadr Road on Tuesday.

Ashfaq Kothari, Assistant Manager HR, left the office after signing off his duty and was on his way home when intercepted by the criminals near the Artillery Maidan police station. They snatched his mobile phone and cash at gunpoint and fled. The victim lodged a complaint with the Artillery Maidan police.
