ISLAMABAD, April 2: The number of voters in the federal capital has gone up to 340,500, an assistant election commissioner told Dawn on Tuesday.

The Election Commission Office, Islamabad, received new electoral rolls prepared by National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) for the forthcoming general elections.

According to the fresh electoral rolls the number of voters of 21-year of age or above has gone up to 340,500 from the previous 233,822 voters, the official said.

He said the election commission had given 20 days from April 10 to 30 for receiving objections on the fresh electoral rolls.

About 99 registration centres would be set up in Islamabad where people could lodge their objections on fresh voter lists, if any.

Elaborating the procedure of preparing the final lists, the official said if any objection is raised against any voter, he/she will have to appear before the returning officer of the relevant area to prove his/her eligibility to become a registered voter.

Three civil judges Islamabad have been appointed as returning officers for Islamabad who will take decision on the objections on voter’s list.

These three returning officers are civil judge Islamabad; Mohammad Jehangir Mir, Adila Altaf and Nadia Ikram.

Civil judge Mohammad Jehangir will hear cases of sectors F- 5, F-6, F-18, F-10, and G-8. Civil judge Adila Altaf will deal with cases of sectors G-6, G-7, G-8, G-9 and G-10. Cases of rural area of Islamabad will be decided by Nadia Ikram.

The decision of returning officers on objections on voters will be sent to Nadra again for the issuance of final voter’s lists which will be issued by Nadra by May 29.

A number of discrepancies have been found in the voter’s lists issued by Nadra.
