LAHORE, Nov 8: Canadian Deputy High Commissioner in Pakistan Mr Nicholas Coghlan has said Toronto was concerned over the current political scenario in Pakistan and it will accelerate its efforts to impress upon the rulers to restore democracy and normalise situation swiftly.

The diplomat stated this on Thursday at a meeting with Pakistan Muslim League (N) Central Secretary Finance and former MNA Mohammad Pervaiz Malik. Mr Coghlan was accompanied by a senior High Commission officer.

Malik told the Canadian diplomats that after imposition of emergency and suspension of the Constitution, thousands of political workers, a majority of them belonging to PML (N) and its lawyers’ wing, had been arrested.

He said the political activists and lawyers were being subjected to torture in jails, while police also manhandled and detained some of their relatives
