LAHORE, Oct 28: The federal government has allowed the provinces to purchase heavy-duty imported utility vehicles and jeeps.

It has nevertheless maintained ban on purchase of luxury vehicles, including their variants such as jeeps, double-cabin pickups, coasters and other automobiles falling in this category.

The allowed vehicles include single-cabin pickups, minus 3,000cc, ambulance vans and soft or hard top non-turbo 4,200 jeeps already in use of law enforcement agencies, according to a circular sent to all provinces.

The provincial governments have, therefore, been allowed to take decision on the purchase of the permitted vehicles for themselves and for district governments according to their budgetary provisions and rules without referring to the centre.

The circular clarified that for luxury vehicles, the sanctioning authority would continue to be the prime minister. —- Intikhab Hanif
