MIRAMSHAH, Oct 27: Two paramilitary soldiers were wounded in an attack on a checkpoint near Miramshah, the headquarters of the North Waziristan Agency, on Friday night, sources said.
Militants armed with machineguns attacked the Amin checkpoint and wounded two paramilitary soldiers. Security forces returned the fire and the battle continued for more than an hour, they said.
A school building was damaged in the crossfire.
Meanwhile, militants warned Dawar tribesmen to postpone a jirga scheduled for Sunday and retract their statements that they would drive out foreigners from the area.
The warning was given in leaflets distributed in Miramshah and other areas, residents said.
It said that some tribal elders had changed their loyalty to the government and were now working against the Taliban and foreign militants in Waziristan.
The Pakistan government had launched the operation against the Taliban at the behest of the United States and tribesmen on both sides of the border were bearing the brunt of the war, it said.—Correspondent
