HYDERABAD, March 21: The activists of Sindh National Party (Dodo Mehri group) staged a token hunger strike outside the Hyderabad press club here on Thursday against the construction of greater Thal canal.

Talking to newsmen on this occasion, their leaders said that the 1991 Water Accord was signed when undemocratic government was in power in Sindh.

They recalled that whole of the Sindhi nation at that time had opposed the agreement.

They said that now greater Thal canal, which was against the interests of Sindh, was being constructed on the pretext of the same accord notwithstanding the fact that it had not been mentioned in clause 14 of the accord.

They said that while approving this project, Sindh was not taken into confidence and demanded that the work on this project should be stopped.

Those who led the protest included Dodo Mehri, chief of Sindh Sagar Party, Moulana Azizullah Bohyo, central leaders of Sindh National Council, Hussain Bukhsh Thebo, Punhal Sario and Chacha Mohammad Ali Leghari, and Sindh Hari Committee leader, Zamir Lashari.

THREAT: A villager of deh Kakeji, Khipro, Mirpurkhas district, Mohammad Ibrahim, has threatened to commit self-immolation if the authorities failed to take an action against a landlord of Phuladioon, Haji Mohammad, who had refused to pay him the remaining amount of Rs650,000 for the land he bought from him.

Speaking at a news conference at the Hyderabad press club here on Thursday, Ibrahim said that Mohammad used to be a pauper but after becoming a Tapedar he had become a millionaire and was now the owner of property valued at Rs40 million.

He said that he had sold out 16 acres of land to Mohammad for Rs800,000 but had been paid only Rs150,000 and the landlord had managed to get the land transferred in his name without paying the remaining amount.

He alleged that he was being threatened with dire consequences by Mohammad.

He threatened to commit self-immolation outside the Hyderabad press club if he was not provided justice.

ARREST: Some citizens of Samaro and Mirpurkhas have demanded of the authorities to order the arrest of Seth Gulab Rai and other accused of the murder of a class X student, Altaf Khaskheli.

Speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Thursday, Sikandar Khan Qaimkhani, Allah Warayo Khaskheli, Seth Bhembro Malhi and others said that instead of arresting the accused nominated in the murder of Altaf, the chief of Khaskheli community and Nazim of Samaro taluka, Sardar Ghulam Mustafa Khaskheli, had been arrested for the killing of Seth Gobind Rai.

They claimed that Ghulam Mustafa was innocent and accused the police of supporting Seth Gulab Rai and his accomplices.

They demanded that SHO, taluka Mirpurkhas police station, Ghulam Nabi Shar, official in charge, Mirwah Gorchani police post, Imam Ali Samoon, and investigating officer Abdul Quddoos Shaikh, should be removed and some honest and impartial officer should be appointed to investigate the case.
