LAHORE, Oct 4: The World Wildlife Day was observed at Lahore Zoo on Thursday where officials briefed the visitors on habits and habitat of different animals such as lions, monkeys, deer and chimpanzees.

Posters bearing pictures of animals were distributed among visitors besides putting on display stuffed animals. Children had excitement in their eyes when they were given an opportunity to touch the stuffed animals.

Zoo Director Yousaf Pal said lecturing by wildlife experts was aimed at creating awareness about problems wild species were facing in the wake of cutting of jungles and human intervention in their habitats.

Pal said some of the animals facing extinction were being bred at the zoo such as hippopotamus, rhinoceroses and lama. He said a team of doctors was working hard on providing best medical care to animals in the zoo.

Safe Mother plan: The Punjab government is extending the Punjab Safe Motherhood Initiative Project (PSMIP) to Nankana district through Fatima Jinnah Medical College/Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) after the success of the pioneer project in Sheikhupura district.

Launched in collaboration with the Unicef and Jahandad Society for Community Development (JSCD), the PSMIP will offer round-the-clock Emergency Obstetric coverage to Nankana district residents at DHQ and THQ hospitals by monthly rotation of doctors from SGRH.

The announcement was made by Nankana district project coordinator Dr Alia Ali while giving a presentation on the project at a media workshop at JSCD offices on Thursday.
