LAHORE, Oct 1: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal deputy secretary-general Liaquat Baloch on Monday hinted at boycotting the next parliamentary elections if they were conducted by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) which had made itself controversial and biased in favour of Gen Musharraf.

Talking to reporters, Mr Baloch said by issuing a notification to make Gen Musharraf eligible to seek re-election in uniform and subsequently taking every step in support of the regime, the ECP had lost its credibility as an impartial constitutional institution.

“The APDM leadership will decide if it should at all take part in the elections in a situation where odds are against the opposition and laws are being manipulated in favour of the dictator who has destroyed all national institutions and endangered the federation by initiating army operation in tribal areas and Balochistan,” he said.

He was of the view that if the APDM took a decision, the opposition might abstain from the next general elections.

Mr Baloch said all APDM lawmakers had handed their resignations over to president Raja Zafarul Haq who would submit them to the National Assembly speaker on Tuesday (today).

Prior to that a meeting of the legislators would be held in the Parliament Lodges from where they would leave for the National Assembly building to submit their resignations. — Correspondent
