HYDERABAD, March 16: The president of Pakistan People’s Party, Sindh, Nisar Khuhro, has deplored that although several district and taluka councils had rejected the Thal canal project, the government was going ahead with it.
While talking to a gathering of the party workers at the residence of Usman Kennedy, who announced joining the PPP with his colleagues on Friday, Mr Khuhro asked that if these councils, which were created under the new devolution system, had no say or weight, why this system was introduced.
Lashing out at the governor and ministers of Sindh, he said that these people did not represent the wishes of the people of province as claimed by the rulers.
He maintained that if the district Nazim was the chief executive of the district then why the police arrested so many people on Thursday in the PPP rally against the Thal canal.
Mr Khuhro said that as long as the army remained at the helm of affairs the borders would remain unsafe and added that whenever the army ruled over the country, it suffered colossal loss, either in shape of dismemberment or isolation.
He said that the masses had weighed the political parties and added that President Gen Pervez Musharraf had also made it clear that he would continue as president regardless of the election results.
He said that Musharraf had no respect for the votes of people and politics despite the fact that the country was created by a politician and not by a soldier.
He urged the people to prepare themselves for a silent revolution.
The PPP leader said that the people remembered the 1983 Movement for Restoration of Democracy and they were again ready to take to streets.
He said that 2002 should be the historic year to give a clear message that either the people would rule the country or it would remain in control of some selected people.
SPSF-SB: The activists of the SPSF (SB) held a protest demonstration outside the Hyderabad Press Club on Friday against the arrest of their leaders.
Addressing the rally, M.A. Chandio and T.A. Memon, said that the Karyo Ganhwar police (Badin) and administration had launched a crackdown against the followers of late Mir Murtaza Bhutto.
They said that Saheb Khan Leghari, Shah Bux Leghari, Razi Khan Leghari and Yousuf Khan Leghari had been arrested without a reason.
They warned that if they were not released a series of protest demonstrations would be held throughout Sindh.
