KARACHI: The Sindh High Court asked the city traffic police on Wednesday to submit its report on compliance with its order for the elimination smoke-emitting vehicles from the city roads.

Traffic deputy inspector-general Wajid Ali Khan appeared before a division bench comprising Justices Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Mohammad Athar Saeed and stated that on the demand of the transporters’ associations, the Sindh governor had allowed the removal of vehicles in phases up to 2010.

The bench observed that it wanted to ensure compliance with the court orders and was not concerned with the orders of the governor. The deadline had already expired, it said, and asked the DIG to file a comprehensive report on compliance by Aug 23.

The bench is seized of a petition moved by Advocate Islam Hussain against air and noise pollution. It calls for replacement of the existing rickshaws and elimination of smoke-emitting vehicles.—SAK
