LAHORE, March 11: A 1926 model Dodge Brothers car will participate in the antique car rally being organized by the Punjab Tourism Development Corporation.

The antique car rally will start from the Hazoori Bagh to the Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi, via the GT Road on Wednesday (tomorrow). As many as 30 cars have been registered for the event, TDCP officials told Dawn on Monday.

The registered cars have been divided into four categories —- original pre-1955 model, pre-1955 cars with altered engines, pro-1955 to 1965 and pro-1965 to 1975 model cars.

It is learnt that the TDCP has also registered a 1921 model Willy Overland car but it will not participate in the Lahore-Rawalpindi rally.

The Willy Overland will, however, participate in the rally being organized in the city on Tuesday (today) to create awareness and promote tourism.

The TDCP will assemble all the registered cars outside a local hotel on Egerton Road at 5pm and brief car owners about the event and its by-laws. Later, the city antique car rally will make a round of the city. The rally will move through The Mall, the Racecourse Road, the Shadman Chowk, the Jail Road, the Main Boulevard, the Liberty Roundabout, the Qadhafi Stadium, the Ferozepur Road, the canal and back to the hotel.

The car rally for Rawalpindi will start from the Hazoori Bagh at 9am. The rally will make three 15-minute stopovers at the Gujranwala Cantt, the Kharian TDCP resort and the Canal Rest House, Jhelum. The corporation will also run its double-decker along side the rally carrying journalists.

According to the rally by-laws, the speed limit will be of 40kms per hour. The prizes will, however, be awarded to car owners on the basis of appearance and condition of the cars and code of conduct enroute. The corporation will minus points of car owners charged with any violation enroute.

The TDCP has decided to award a cash prize of Rs50,000 to the first position holder from among the first category of pre-1955 original cars. First runners-up and second runners-up prizes of Rs25,000 and Rs15,000, respectively, will also be given.

For the other three categories, the TDCP has decided to give one cash prize of Rs10,000 each.

Federal Tourism Minister S.K. Tressler will give away the prizes to the winners at a function at the Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi.

TDCP transport in-charge Zareef Satti said the corporation would plan to organize the event at the national as well as international level.
