HYDERABAD, Aug 7: Jamaat-i-Islami secretary-general Munawar Hassan has said that President General Pervez Musharraf would not be accepted even without uniform and fair elections could not be held under his rule. He urged the People’s Party not to support military dictator.

He was addressing a news conference at JI's markaz Tableegh-e-Islam on Shah Makki road on Tuesday.

He disagreed with Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal secretary-general Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s statement that the president should be bailed out.

He said being a political worker it doesn't suit anyone to scare people that there would be another martial law in the country. He said political workers should be more vigorous in launching campaign against such attempts.

He said that he didn't see martial law after Musharraf in the country. He said Pervez Musharraf's date of birth was 1943 which indicates that he had completed his service as chief of army staff so he is holding this post unconstitutionally.

‘He is not acceptable with or without uniform,’ he vowed.

He referred to the opposition parties’ efforts of past several months to forge a grand alliance so that a national government could be formed for holding free and fair elections.

He said the formation of the All Parties Democratic Alliance (APDM) was the outcome of these efforts.

Regarding the reported ongoing PPP-government secret talks he advised the PPP leadership not to indulge in back channel parleys with the military regime because it would tarnish their own democratic identity.

He urged Benazir Bhutto not to back military dictator and sabotage opposition efforts rather become part of the APDM for a joint struggle.

He said a joint declaration that was issued by the opposition parties contained an option of joint resignations by opposition in case President Musharraf opted for re-election from present assemblies but only the PPP differed on this point.

He alleged that recent engagements of the President in the governor and the chief minister's houses were a conspiracy against decisions of judiciary and wishes of people.

He also strongly reacted to Benazir Bhutto's statement regarding Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan and said that Dr. Khan was the most respectable person after Quaid-i-Azam as he had provided bulwark to the country against aggression.

He said, Ms. Bhutto’s statement indicated that she was following US agenda.

He said that APMD was holding a meeting with lawyers on August 15 to discuss the president's plans of re-election.
