KOLKATA, Aug 4: Pakistan outplayed South Africa 3-1 to win the bronze medal in the second edition of Commonwealth Men's Volleyball Championship here on Saturday. It was a well deserved victory for Pakistan who finished with third position in the championship. South Africa ended up at fourth, Canada at fifth, Sri Lanka sixth, Bangladesh seventh, New Zealand eighth and Nigeria at ninth slot.
In the first set of the match, Pakistan’s ace spikers Naseer Ahmed and Kashif Mansoor scored major share of fifteen points to win the game by 25-10.
South African team recovered in the second set and led the proceeding in the early stages with the score of 25-23, leveling the set 1-1.
In the third set, fiercely competitive volleyball was witnessed including powerful exchanges between the defences of both teams. The green shirts, however, performed better to clinch the set with the score at 25-21.
In the fourth and final set Pakistan displayed their best game and won it by 25-21 and with it the bronze medal.
Chairman Pakistan Volleyball Federation, Chaudhry Muhammad Yaqoob congratulated the Pakistan team on winning the bronze medal in the championship and hoped that the players would put up a better performance in the upcoming Pakistan-India volleyball test series.—APP
