SIALKOT, July 29: Thousands of special bags and food packets meant for the flood-hit people of Balochistan are rotting at the offices of non-government organisations and social welfare and revenue departments in Sialkot and Narowal districts because the government has no policy on distribution of relief goods.

The federal, provincial and district governments appealed to businessmen, philanthropists and NGOs to provide relief goods for flood victims about three weeks ago and told the social welfare and revenue departments to collect these goods.

Now, thousands of these bags are rotting at the offices of the social welfare and revenue departments and NGOs in Sialkot, Daska, Bhopalwala, Sambrial, Uggoki-Bajwat, Pasrur, Satrah, Badiana, Chawinda, Shakargarh, Zafarwal, Noorkot, Baddo Malhi and Narowal.

Sialkot District Officer (Revenue) Aamir Ejaz Akbar said that relief goods could not be sent to the flood-hit areas because district authorities did not know where to send them.

He said that relief goods would be dispatched on the orders of army officials or other authorities involved in flood relief. However, he said that relief goods were not rotting and they could be sent to flood-hit areas within a couple of days.
