ISLAMABAD, March 9: Pakistan Muslim League (N) has rejected efforts to bring about arbitrary amendments to the constitution and demanded of the government to convene an all parties conference to get a broad consensus on the proposed amendment package.

Briefing newsmen after the party’s manifesto committee meeting here on Friday, chairman of the committee Mian Mohammad Yasin Khan Wattoo said that his party was determined to resist any one-sided amendment in the constitution.

He said the present was an unconstitutional interim government which cannot make any change in the constitution.

Among others who attended the manifesto committee meeting and were present on the occasion included, former senator Akram Zaki, Tehmina Daultana, Zafar Iqbal Jhagra, Syed Zafar Ali Shah, Ahsan Iqbal, Anwar Kamal, and Ayaz Khan Swati.

The committee appointed eight sub-committees for the preparation of party manifesto, and Akram Zaki as committee’s secretary.

The committee adopted a resolution which called upon the government to invite all political parties without loss of time to discuss and reach a consensus on the proposed amendments to the constitution.

It said any amendment to the constitution by an individual would be disastrous and that the party would make it an issue in its election campaign.

The resolution expressed fears that the steps in connection were creating doubts about fairness, transparency and impartiality of the election process.
