National Assembly session ‘summoned’
ISLAMABAD, July 27: The government has summoned the National Assembly session at 5pm on Monday, which is likely to be the last session of the lower house before the elections, Dawn has learnt.
Sources said the unusual and unscheduled session had given a rise to speculations in the capital about the fate of the assembly as well as the government.
During the session, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz may advise the dissolution of the assembly, a move aimed at bringing an interim prime minister to the stage.
Some unusual legislation as a result of the PPP-government deal may then be tabled in the house.
The sources said the president might ask the prime minister to quit during the session and nominate his successor as was done by Zafarullah Khan Jamali so that his successor could get a vote of confidence from the house.
They said the government might also table a much-demanded legislation seeking provincial autonomy.
The sources said that Hamid Nasir Chattha was a likely candidate for the premiership in the interim set-up if the government succeeded in striking a deal with PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
However, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi said that it was a routine and scheduled session which would last for about a month to complete its parliamentary calendar days.
“We have 71 days of backlog which we would like to cover before the completion of the tenure of the present assembly,” he added.
However, sources privy to the latest developments claimed that the upcoming National Assembly session would not only be decisive for the present government but would also unfold a number of other issues.
