Baloch for ‘firm’ foreign policy

LAHORE, July 23: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal deputy secretary-general Liaquat Baloch has said America is looking for an excuse to launch an attack on Pakistan, but Gen Pervez Musharraf has yet to adopt any firm policy on the defence of the motherland.

In a press statement here on Monday, Mr Baloch said the situation demanded an immediate end to the military dictatorship and the establishment of a caretaker government of national consensus to work out a firm foreign policy befitting a sovereign state.

He said the very fact that Washington had decided to sell fighter planes to India was in line with the American policy of strengthening the neighbouring country to keep Islamabad under constant pressure. This, he said, must serve as an eye-opener for the Pakistani rulers who claimed to be the US’s frontline allies.

The US administration, he alleged, was strengthening India to muster up support from New Delhi in case of an attack on Pakistan and also to ‘solve’ the Kashmir dispute in a way that suited them most.

Referring to the latest statement of Pakistan People’s Party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto, the MMA leader said she was not fully aware of the country’s political realities for having been abroad for the last one decade.

Mr Baloch was of the view that getting rid of military dictatorship should be the first priority for all political and religious parties in the country.
