LAHORE, July 16: The central executive committee of the Jamaat-i-Islami is scheduled to discuss here on July 19 if more Jamaat legislators should resign from the national and provincial legislatures.

The Jamaat is considering the resignation of more MPs after its amir Qazi Husain Ahmad decided to quit the National Assembly in its next session.

According to sources, the party is of the view that more resignations by the legislators of a component party would put the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, particularly Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, under pressure to follow the suit. The JI thinks that tendering resignations was one of the means to prevent president Gen Pervez Musharraf from seeking his re-election for another five-year term in the presidency in uniform.

According to a press release, the party’s executive will meet at Mansoora with Qazi Husain Ahmad in chair. The agenda, according to the release, is the political situation obtaining in the country.
